Foundryside (REVIEW)

Whoooo boy this was a good one!

I've had this book in my physical TBR a while now and I finally decided to get around to reading it and I'm really glad I did!

Foundryside begins with a heist, one that sets the stage very well for the world we will be reading about throughout the trilogy and how it functions. It does an excellent job conveying the class differences and varying areas of Tevanne and sets up a magic system that is unlike any other that I've seen before.

This is one of the few books where the worldbuilding stole my heart more than the characters, I LOVE this magic system- I find it so fascinating and unique and truly something to marvel at. Though the worldbuilding is my favourite aspect of Foundryside, I do love our cast of characters.

Sancia is a very intelligent main character who makes rational and respectable decisions based on the world unfolding around her. She is a very believable character and was definitely my favourite perspective to follow. Sancia's relationship with a character named Clef takes the book by storm with hilarious banter, heartfelt scenes, and two souls trying desperately to understand each other.

I am anxious to read the rest of the series as all my points above indicate why I believe this could be a wonderful trilogy, though did have a few issues.

I found some of the parts especially towards the beginning to be overwhelmingly info-dumpy about the world and magic system- which although I love, I feel would be more realistic if we were left in a bit of mystery and left to the readers to theorize rather than know the ins and outs. Secondly some points of this book felt significantly geared towards a younger audience than my reading interest and as someone who isn't much of a fan of YA novels, I'm worried this will take away my enjoyment as the series continues and the plot thickens.

I'm cautiously optimistic for the rest of the series but do highly recommend Foundryside to anyone who's interested!
