Hunger of the Gods (BOOK REVIEW)
Holy Shit
Hunger of the Gods is a neverending source of adrenaline and shock as page after page we dive further into this magical and deeply terrifying world. All our favourite characters from the first book are back and with new stakes that destroy the foundations of their safety and begin to change the world bit by bit.
Orka as always was a treasure to read about. There is nothing like an angry mom on a revenge rampage and every second of her being on the page was perfection. I adore the way Gwynne writes his characters but he truly put something special into how he wrote Orka.
This is a gorey masterpiece with epic battles, hilarious banter, devastating consequences, and stellar characters that you rarely see elsewhere.
Varg's POV was thrilling and wholesome, filled with all the found family tropes an escapist reader thrives for. I love the way he interacts with the Bloodsworn crew and his bond with Svik (best gremlin man) and Rokia.
Elvar was... Well I liked her a lot more than the first book which is a large step. She had some character development throughout this book that I truly felt fore and her bonds with other characters deepened her connection to the story as a whole. She feels more entwined in the web of plot that Gwynne is spinning than she did in the previous book.
Gudvarr... Now this was shocking to me. Although I didn't love this addition to the story I have to admit seeing this sniveling idiot's inner dialogue was funny. I liked seeing how other characters reacted to his stupidity and the fact that he basically just stumbles into this mess with no idea what he's doing was just kinda hilarious.
Biorr was my nothing character throughout this book, he's sympathetic but he doesn't really do much other than try and build a bond with his rat dad (extremely far back in the bloodline but sh, he's a rat dad) and make connections to some of the children who are in Lik-Rifa's camp.
As for the gods themselves, I want to see them tear shit up in the next book. I'm so excited to watch these gods go up against our determined team of "heroes".
Though this book can be slow at times it was still a blast to read and the pacing only felt off at certain points in the story. The characters made up for this though by being fully fleshed out and understandable even in their occasionally horrible actions.
But the way this book ended, Mr. Gwynne....
If the new book doesn't release soon after that ending I will lose my mind. Nothing was more heartbreaking than to bring the action to a close the way the end of this book did and I am not okay with it but I will be snatching up the next book the moment it releases.
Though it suffers from middle book syndrome I still think this was another masterpiece by Gwynne and I am thrilled to see what comes next
