Physical TBR July 2022

I thought I'd compose a list covering the physical books I have from my TBR list shelved currently.

  1. Jade City by Fonda Lee: This is one of the newest books that I picked up. I’ve heard a lot about it through various adult fantasy reviewers, all of them claiming that it is a beautifully written story. I don’t know much about the story itself, but I believe it is an urban fantasy taking place in China. It’s not very high on my TBR at the moment where I did buy it fairly recently, but I still am very interested in reading this soon!

  1. Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King: I’ve wanted to read this book for a while but I actually picked it up confusing it with another one of Stephen King’s books so its fairly low on my TBR. I’m also not a fan of the letter sizing and font in the edition that I bought, it’s extremely small which makes it difficult for me to read- I may get a secondary copy on my kobo before reading this one.

  1. A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox: This was one of the books I got in an Unplugged Book Box and I absolutely loved the look of this one from the beginning. The cover is beautiful, its nice and short, and it seems like a story I might enjoy. I plan to get around to reading it once I’m less busy with book series and life. I haven’t seen many people talk about this one so I’m very curious to see how I like it.

  1. A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine: This was a book I was excited about, and I happened across it in a thrift shop a few weeks ago. The copy I got is in good condition other than some damage to the cover sleeve as it is a hardcover edition. Everyone who’s read Gideon the Ninth recommended this book to me so I am very intrigued by the idea of a book with a similar feel to Gideon!

  1. In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado: I am so excited to read this book. I added it to my TBR the moment I heard about it. I finally picked up a copy while on vacation with my mom and she is currently reading it now and I will read it as soon as she finishes her readthrough. From what I can tell this is a book I would really like due to the oddly structured narrative and personal themes built into such an intriguing concept.

  1. Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff: I had this at the top of my TBR for a long time but because it is such a monster of a book, I have not gotten around to reading it yet. My dad picked this book up for me for Christmas abd he got me an exceptionally beautiful edition of which I am so grateful to receive such a beautiful copy.

  1. The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne: This is currently the next series I plan to read after I finish The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K Jemisin. I’ve been so excited to start this series since I saw the cover of the first book in a booktube video and that excitement has yet to die. I assume I’ll be starting The Shadow of the Gods in August with my plans to read Nona the Ninth in September.

  1. The City of Dusk by Tara Sim: This was another book I got in an Unplugged Book Box that I am interested in reading. The cover is beautiful, and the title piqued my interest when I first heard about it but so far, I have not heard very many positive reviews.

  1. Caliban’s War by James S.A Corey: This is the second book in The Expanse series following Corey’s fascinating first book; Leviathan Wakes. I am not placing this book exceedingly high on my TBR as the first book has dwindled in interest on me in the months since I read it, but I do plan to read the rest of the Expanse series eventually.

  1. Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennet: I actually wasn’t thinking about reading this series for a long time but upon finding it in a bookstore I had a change of heart because of the stellar description I read on the back. It may not be at the top of my TBR but it is certainly high up on the list.

  1. Kings of Battle and Blood by St. Clair Scarlett: Another book that I received in an Unplugged Book Box that piqued my interest. I am not entirely sold on the premise yet as it is YA styled in tone. I will get around to reading it eventually but it's not a priority. I put YA low on my list of priorities because I often find myself annoyed or uninterested in the prose, characters, and plot- but I have read certain YA books which have amazed me.

  1. The Dragon Republic by R.F Kuang: This is the second book in The Poppy War trilogy which I actually started immediately after reading The Poppy War but for some unknown reason I just could not get into it, I think I was longing for another genre at the time and had picked up some romance books for a little while but I do still plan to finish The Poppy War series.

  1. Iron Gold by Pierce Brown: This is the 4th book in the Red Rising Saga, continuing after the ‘trilogy’. I have been avoiding this book due to the multiple perspectives that are covered in the new portion of the series, I’m concerned I won’t care about the new characters as much but I do plan to read Iron Gold and Dark Age eventually.
