The Cruel Prince (REVIEW)

OKAY So I've had some time to process and now I'm ready to talk.
Rating: 5/5
I expected to hate this book so when I realized that I fucking loved it I was very pleasantly surprised, especially after having a lackluster few reading months of 2021.
This book was nothing like what I thought it'd be. I thought I'd have a typical YA protagonist pining after a toxic abusive asshole and I would hate everything. But that is not what I got in the slightest.

Story 5/5
This story was thrilling. I normally don't care for fae fiction because I find most authors romanticize and make light of what is supposed to be an incredibly cruel species but Holly Black does not shy away from their horrible ways for a single second of this book.
You can feel the fear Jude experiences every day of her young life as she tries to navigate this world as someone who doesn't belong there.
There were so many twists that I for once did not see coming. I'm usually really good at predicting what happens in books but I was delighted to be tricked and turned on my head a few times, especially towards the end.
This was a dark and deeply exciting novel that kept me glued to the page until the very end.

Characters 5/5
WOW.
SO characters are always what I look for when reading a novel. I love characters and I love GOOD characters that I give a shit about. I gave a shit about Aelin in Throne of Glass which is why I loved it, I gave a shit about Maerad and Cadvan (especially Cadvan) in the books of Pellinor. I gave a shit about Gideon and Harrowhark in The Locked Tomb trilogy. These are what made these books fit my favorite shelf so well.
And this is why The Cruel Prince will also be added to my favorites shelf for Jude alone.
Jude is a morally grey badass with nerves of steel and I fucking love her. I love that she's not a great person. I love that she's selfish. I LOVE that she's power hungry.
I'm so sick of these beautiful perfect YA protagonists. Give me aggression and rage and flaws and hatred.
Jude was an amazing character to follow and I loved reading from her perspective when I expected to be reading from the perspective of someone like Taryn (who I despise).
Cardan still needs to find a place in my heart but the ending had me liking him more and more and I'm excited to see what he does in The Wicked King after that plot twist at the end.

Writing 5/5
The writing was beautiful. It was wonderfully dark and twisted, the chapters often ended with striking quotes that left me longing for more, and I was always deeply enchanted by the world around us. Everything had an air of mystery and deceit like the book itself might be lying to you and I found that thrilling.
I'm so happy I finally decided to read this book :)
