Alrighty lets do this
Spoiler warning
Rating: 4.5/5
I really enjoyed this entire series. It was a fun adventure from start to finish and I can't believe I read it all in like 3 weeks. The Cruel Prince is definitely my favourite novel in the whole series but this one is a close second.
Story: 4/5
So Jude has been exiled by Cardan and is living in the human world with Vivi and Oak and she's extremely depressed. After a while an opportunity presents itself and she gets back into the high king's castle disguised as Taryn and Cardan literally goes "bitch I know its you" and things get fun from there.
So basically Cardan pulled a whole sike bitch on everyone and is still in love with Jude and always had been but he exiled her because he wanted her to end her own exile (which she didn't because Jude is a little dumb in this book) and he was writing her a ton of cute angsty letters about how he missed her and was begging her to come back.
The first half of this book really worked for me, I had a lot of fun with seeing Jude and Cardan meet again and figure out everyone's plans but the second half of it was kinda slow and tedious.
Eventually Cardan breaks the throne and crown in a badass way and gets turned into a giant snake and Jude gets a prophecy that for it to be undone the snake has to be killed.
And Jude is apparently super dumb and so is everyone else because the moment I heard the prophecy I knew if you lopped off that snake's head Cardan would just pop out again but no we got like 10 chapters of Jude being angsty and sad and looking around everywhere for a way to save Cardan when the answer was so obvious.
But I did still like the story for the great scenes with all of our characters and the wonderful dialogue from Cardan.
I also kinda feel like this book should have been longer than it was because the ending felt very rushed.
Characters: 4/5
Cardan was perfect in this book. He was witty, he was funny, he was charming, he was everything he should be for this series and I loved every scene with him.
“Mock me all you like. Whatever I imagined then, now it is I who would beg and grovel for a kind word from your lips." His eyes are black with desire. "By you, I am forever undone.” hhhhhh okay sir- please- I need to breathe.
He was honestly so perfect throughout this entire book.
Jude on the other hand went from clever badass to stupid dumbass in this book for some reason.
She turned more into a lovesick puppy rather than the super smart, intriguing girl from the first book and I didn't really like it. Yes she had some good moments but it still really sucked to see one of my favorite characters go that route.
I still liked her character development a lot, she was slowly opening up to the people around her and I really liked that, it sent a good message about being open to people you care about while still remaining strong.
So yes there were a lot of moments where I didn't like Jude, especially towards the end but I also really loved her for most of the book.
Taryn gets a character development in this book that made me go from despising her to tolerating her character in the scenes that she was in so that was very interesting.
Heather should have left Vivi to rot honestly, Vivi sucks as a character, shes a total fae monster and I've never really liked her.
Writing: 5/5
Despite my issues with some of the story the writing was still phenomenal. I was still drawn in to this dangerous and deeply wonderful world and story that made me want to keep reading.
I love how Holly Black writes and she's definitely one of my favourite authors now and I'll gladly read more things that she's written!
